What if you quit exercising?

This isn't really a weight training question more exercise in general but I didn't know where to put but this seems the best.

I'll start with this I'm 6' 135lbs. I am considering joining a gym, to get into some better shape. My question is a little different. Here is the best way I can think to put it.

Does exercising affect you're metabolism? Like if I started exercising would my metbolism get higher. And then I quit excercising, would my metbolism get lower....like lower than what it was before I started exercising?

The more I lift, the more I want to eat, so I eat more. <~ That sounds like a bad Dr. Suess line lol... Someone's 'metabolism' doesn't change too much, although it does differ from person to person quite a bit.

ehh that's confusing;

Your metabolism doesn't follow any kind of linear graph... It goes up, and down, and up and down... When your workout (with weights for example), you can boost your metabolism up, because your body needs to start converting various food items you ate, or stored into energy.

What's important is the Basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is your metabolisms rate of working (maybe there's a better word for it), when your not doing anything. As you workout, over time your BMR increases, which means your burning more calories when your doing nothing. When your stop your workouts, and become a couch potato your BMR decreases...

So keep active!
