I'm not saying that an intake of 1.5x body weight doesn't improve gaining muscle mass, but Silent's point is correct because if you read again...

"A national-level bodybuilding competitor gained more muscle in 12 months than all previous five years....During the next year he upped his protein intake from 175 grams day to 300 to 400 grams each day. By this I must make the assumption that he is not a beginner and will have a hard time gaining muscle mass.
